  2014 International Portrait Competition

Our goal is to create an exhibition, in conjunction withour annual conference, of the finest portrait and figurative work being created today worldwide.  The competition is open to all artists, members and non-members. 

 

Submission deadline is March 4, 2014.  Click on the prospectus to the left and read all the rules and guidelines.
     • All entries must be uploaded through the website in a jpg digital format.
     • Over $60,000 in cash and prizes. 
     • The Draper Grand Prize includes cash and prizes totalling over $10,000 and a feature article in International Artist magazine.

2013 International Portrait Competition winners

  • Awards & Recognition
    Top award winners will be eligible for over $60,000 in cash and prizes.  The William Draper Grand Prize includes a  feature article in International Artist Magazine and a cash prize of $5,000 sponsored by Jack Richeson & Co.  Finalist also receive recognition in the Art of the Portrait® Journal and on the Portrait Societys website.  Top 20 finalists receive complementary tuition to The Art of the Portrait® Conference 2014, as well as other cash and prizes. 

  • Competition Timetable
    Submission Deadline:        March 4, 2014
    Finalist Notification:         March 27, 2014
    Exhibition Dates:            April 24-27, 2014

    Please download and read the 2014 prospectus located far left on this page. We  accept entries only by digital entry uploaded via our submission form.

  • Cost
    The $45 Entry Fee covers up to 3 unique submissions. Payments can be made with most major credit cards or using a PayPal account via our submission form. The entry fee is non-refundable and must accompany your submission.

  • Entry Guidelines
    Entry Criteria: All entries must meet the following:
     
    Must be the artist’s own original design and concept 
    • Created independently
    • Completed after March 2011
    • For 2D the longest side should not be larger than 65”
    • For 3D the piece should not be over life-size
    • Portrait Society Board Members and Gold Medal recipients are ineligible 
    • Artists that win the Grand Prize are prohibited from entering for three full years
    • Faculty donating their time to teach at The Art of the Portrait are eligible to enter the competition.
     
    In addition, no photography, electronic, computer generated art, art done in a class, workshop or under supervision is eligible. All other media is accepted and encouraged, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. Participants are eligible to submit up to three artworks for consideration.  
     
    Only electronic submissions will be accepted.  Up to three digital image files can be submitted.   Note: Sculpture entries can provide up to 3 views of the same piece.  Electronic submissions through the Portrait Society of America’s secure site can be uploaded through the March 4, 2013 deadline. 

  • Formatting Digital Entry
    Only Digital entries will be accepted.  
     
    Up to three digital image files can be submitted on online via our entry form. 
     
    Save each file in the following format: 
    JPG or TIFF
    No larger than 3 megabytes each
    300dpi with longest side 8"
    Images should ONLY be of the artwork Do not include matting, frame, etc. in the image. 

  • Labeling Entry
    LABELING YOUR DIGITAL FILES
    For each of your digital file being uploaded please use the following format: Artists last name First initial,
    Entry Letter, all separated by a dash. For example: smith-j-A.jpg
