The Portrait Academy Series, now in its ninth year, provides attendees with a unique opportunity to watch, learn and talk with nationally known artists. Each year, we offer Academies in several locations. Academies typically include a combination of educational events such as demonstrations, Q&A sessions, hands-on workshops, panel discussions, independent film viewing and additional guest lectures. Check out this year's events and choose a program that fits your needs.
Portrait Academy Weekends
The 2012 Fall Portrait Academy, hosted by the Portrait Society of America and sponsored by the City of Miami Arts & Entertainment Council, will be held in Miami, Florida at the beautiful Fairchild Gardens and historical Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The Miami Portrait Academy is a two-day event featuring an artist demonstration, lecture and a plein air workshop.
On Friday, November 2, professor David Chang will give an informative lecture, at the Fairchild Gardens, on the historical artist, John Singer Sargent, who has been considered the “leading portrait painter of his generation” and was also an extended house guest of the Vizcaya’s owner at the time, James Deering. Following the illustrated presentation and lecture, Hodges Soileau will demonstrate his approach to the portrait during his live outdoors portrait demonstration.
The Portrait Academy will continue to day two, Saturday, November 3 at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Attendees will meet in the gardens for a Plein Air workshop and receive one-on-one instruction from faculty: Hodges Soileau, David Chang, and Kerry Vosler.
